Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently purify exhaust gas, by sufficiently reaction treating exhasut gas by dividing a catalyst bed into oxidation and reduction reaction portions at an outer circumference and a center, by mixing reacted gas passing through both reaction portions and by further making reacted gas react.
CONSTITUTION: Exhaust gas flowing through an exhaust pipe 1 is divided into gas passing through a passage 15 between the exhaust pipe 1 and an inner pipe 5 and gas passing through the inner pipe 5 before entering a catalyst convertor 3 secondary air sucked from an introudcing port 12 through a check valve 14 by an exhaust pulsating effect is mixed into exhaust gas passing through the passage 15, and the mixed gas flows into an outer circumferential oxidation reaction portion 8a of a catalyst bed 8, thus oxidizing HC, CO. Meanwhile, exhaust gas passing through the inside of the inner pipe 5 flows into a central reduction reaction portion 8b, and NOx is reduced by HC, CO at the portion 8b. Consequently, the outer circumference portion is under an oxidation atmosphere and the center portion under a reduction atmosphere in the catalyst bed 8, thus reducing all three components in exhaust gas.
