Abstract
1391204 Treating exhaust gases EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 18 May 1972 [26 May 1971] 23341/72 Heading F1B Exhaust gas purifying reactor for an I. C. engine comprises an inner perforated wall 20 having one end 16 adapted for connection to an exhaust conduit of the engine and the other end closed off, an outer perforated wall 22 surrounding and spaced from the inner wall, the annular space between the perforated walls containing an exhaust gas purification catalyst 24 and an enclosing wall 25 spaced from and surrounding the outer perforated wall to define an annular space for receiving exhaust gas which has passed radially outwardly through the catalyst containing space, said enclosing wall having an exhaust gas aperture and being adapted for connection to an exhaust pipe. The assembly is held together by bolts passed through holes 29 in end-plates 27, 28. The reactor is made from mild steel or stainless steel. The catalyst bed 24 consists of saddles of a nickel-copper alloy (66% Ni, 31À5% Cu) mixed with tubes or rings of a refractory or ceramic material, the presence of which stops the catalyst agglomerating in use. The reactor is connected to the engine by an exhaust conduit of a length such that the gas enters the reactor at not less than 650‹F. Typical dimensions of the reactor are:- length 50 mm; dia. of inner wall, 50 mm; dia. of outer wall 150 mm; dia. of perforations 4 mm.
