Abstract

PURPOSE: To heighten the exhaust gas purification effect, by oxidizing carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon in the periphery of a first catalyst bed, and reducing nitrogen oxide in the center of the first catalyst bed and causing remaining carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon to react with oxygen in a second catalyst bed.
CONSTITUTION: The exhaust gas flowing through an exhaust pipe 1 is divided into a part, which goes into a passage 15 defined between the exhaust pipe 1 and an inner cylinder 5, and another part, which goes into the inner cylinder 5, before entering a catalytic converter. Secondary air from an inlet port 12 is mixed with the exhaust gas part in the passage 15. The mixture flows into the periphery 8a of the first catalyst bed 8 so that the carbon monoxide and dydrocarbon are oxidized. The exhaust gas part in the inner cylinder 5 flows into the center 8b of the bed 8 so that the nitrogen oxide is reduced to carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon. The remaining oxygen, hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide are mixed with one another in a mixing portion 10. This mixture flows into the second catalyst bed 9 so that the remaining carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon are oxidized by the remaining oxygen.
