Abstract

1493398 Catalytic treatment of I.C. exhaust gases NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 15 Nov 1974 49462/74 Headings BIF and B1W An I.C. engine comprises an exhaust gas conduit 16 containing in series an oxidation catalyst section 26 for reducing the oxygen content in the exhaust gas fed to it, possibly to zero, by oxidation of hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide in the gas, a reducing catalyst section 22 to reduce nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas, another oxidation catalyst section 24 to oxidise hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, and secondary air supply means for feeding secondary air e.g. via conduit 60 into conduit 16 upstream of catalyst 26. In operation, engine temperature controlled switches 52 and 70 and control valves 30 and 56 operate so that, at normal operating conditions, air from pump 28 passes via metering orifice 46 to mix with exhaust gas from engine 12. During cold engine operation rather more air from pump 28 passes via larger metering orifice 48 to mix with the exhaust gas. When decelerating, air from pump 28 is discharged to the atmosphere or returned to conduit 37 via 62.
