Abstract

PURPOSE: To establish an air-fuel ratio at an excessive density side in the case of a part of cylinders being on a standstill, to discharge sperately discharge gased from a stopping cylinder group and a working cylinder group so that they will be brough in a seperate contact with either one of two catalysts to deoxidize NOx, and afterward to oxidize by the use of a ternary catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Discharge gases of from No. I to No. III and from No. IV to No. VI are seperately collected after passing through 6' and 6'' respectively. A discharge sensor 4 is mounted at a partition wall positioned at the middle of the discharge pipes 6' and 6''. The inside of a ternary catalyst 7 is also divided into two rooms where ternary catalysts 7' and 7'' are situated individually from each other, and a ternary catalyst 8 is placed following the catalysts 7' and 7''. For example, when No. I to No. III cylinders are on a standstill, what passes through the discharge pipe 6' is only air, and discharge gas passing through the discharge pipe 6'' becomes short of oxygen because an air-fuel mixture is set at an excessive density side, and the ternary catalyst 7'' acts as a deoxidizing catalyst.
