Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a discharge lamp lighting apparatus, in which phase angle of a phase-controlling thyristor is forcibly shifted backward at the time of starting the discharge lamp, whereby it is prevented that excessive input current is passed at the time of starting the discharge lamp. CONSTITUTION:Transistor 13 is energized by the greater of voltage signal based on the lamp valtage and suplied from terminal (d) and voltage signal supplied from resistance 19. Since lamp voltage is zero at the time of starting the lamp, transistor 18 is kept OFF but transistor 13 is turned ON via resistances 19, 20. Resultantly current flowing in capacitor 8 is by-passed, so that charging time of capacitor 8 is long and the phase angle at which a thyristor connected between power source and discharge lamp is energized is shifted backward. Subsequently, when lamp voltage (d) is raised and voltage across terminals (k) and (e) becomes a predetermined value, transistor 18 is turned ON but transistor 13 is turned OFF, whereby charging time of capacitor 8 becomes short. When the lamp voltage is raised further, transistor 13 is turned ON, and charging time of capacitor 8 again becomes long.
