Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a novel composite ion exchange membrane which is obtd. by attaching an electronic conductive thin film to the surface of an ion exchange membrane, and is useful as a fuel cell or other cell constituting element, a ferroelectric substance, a sensor element, etc.
CONSTITUTION: An electronic conductive thin film with a resistance at room temp. below 103, esp. 102 Ω.cm is attached to the surface of an ion exchange membrane contg. sulfonic acid groups in its principal chain obtd. by treating an ion exchange membrane, e.g. EVA film with fuming sulfuric acid-a sulfuric acid soln. The thickness of the film is desirable to be 0.1W10, esp. 0.5W7 μm, and the film is made of metal such as Ni, carbon, metal oxide, metal sulfide or one or more kinds of water insol. halides of te Ib group elements. When the film is used as a current collector, the internal resistance can be lowered by bringing a netted or cellular metal into close contact with the film.
