CONSTITUTION: A mixed gas consisting of CH3CN, NH3, O2 or an O2-contg. gas, and optionally steam or an inert gas is brought into contact with a compound metal oxide catalyst of the formula contg. Mo, Fe and an alkali metal optionally supported on silica gel, etc. at 300W600, esp. 350W500°C to produce hydrocyanic acid. In the formula, x is 6W18, pref. 8W15. The molar ratio of NH3/CH3CN in the mixed gas is 0.9W2, esp. 1.0W1.5 and that of 02/CH3CN 1W20, esp. 1W10. By the reaction, the following results are obtd.; a CH3CN reaction rate of 95.0%, a hydrocyanic acid selectivity of 68.0% and a hydrocyanic acid yield of 64.6%.
