Abstract

PURPOSE: To accomplish an efficient production of HCN with equipment cost and energy reduced due to the reaction temperature lowered by bringing CH3CN, NH3 and O2 into a phase reaction in the presence of a highly active Mo-Fe oxide catalyst with an atomic ratio Fe/Mo of a specified value.
CONSTITUTION: CH3CN, NH3 and O2 are brought into reaction at 300 to 600°C under a pressure of 1 to a few atmospheres in the presence of a Mo-Fe oxide (e.g. Mo12Fe12O54) catalyst with an atomic ratio Fe/Mo of 0.5 to 1.5, preferably 0.8 to 1.5, to produce HCN. In order to prepare this catalyst, Mo or Mo compounds and Fe or Fe compounds are dissolved or suspended in water or acidic solvent, provided with a carrier as desired, dried, sintered and molded. The molecular ratio NH3/ CH3CN is 0.9 to 2 and the molecular ratio O2/CH3CN 1 to 20. This method needs no priceless metal for a catalyst component, thus providing an inexpensive HCN at a higher yield.
