Abstract
PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for light source from the outside, simultaneously measure the heating part temperature and shape of a quartz tube and enable the preform for high quality optical fiber to be produced by making use of the infrared rays which the heated quartz tube produces. CONSTITUTION:A quartz tube 1 is supported and revolved by a glass lathe and raw material gases for glass forming are supplied. The tube 1 is heated and its inside pressure is adjusted. At this time, the infrared rays which the tube 1 being heated produces are condensed by an objective lens 11 and selectively transmit through a wavelength filter 12. The transmitted infrared ray is deflected with a deflector 14 and is detected with an infrared ray receiver 13. The temperature signal and tube diameter signal are simultaneously drawn out from electronic circuits, the former from the intensity component of the infrared ray signal having been thereby obtained and the latter from the frequency component thereof. These signals are then fed back to a heating adjustment part and a glass tube inside pressure adjusting part respectively. It is also possible that the observer 17 observes these through an optical path change mirror 15 and eyepiece lens 16.
