Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a secondary air supply system, which can effectively purify the non-combustion component in the exhaust gas with the rate of supply of the secondary air made proportional to the rate of withdrawal of air by making the pressure difference between the upstream and downstream sides of a throttle section formed in a secondary air passage to be proportional to the back pressure.
CONSTITUTION: This secondary air supply system 10 comprises an air pump 11, secondary air passages 12 to 14, pressure regulator 30, a variable throttle valve 50, a check valve 15 and a secondary air injection nozzle 16 provided on an exhaust tube 2. The pressure regulator 30 includes a diaphragm as a comparator means for comparing the pressure difference between the upstream and downstream sides of a throttle section 60 of a variable throttle valve 50 and the exhaust tube back pressure, and it is operated to made the afore-mentioned pressure difference to be proportional to the exhaust tube back pressure through adjustment of the upstream side pres ure on the throttle section 60. The variable throttle valve 50 starts to be opened when the intake negative pressure is introduced into a chamber 54 as a solenoid controlled valve 19 is opened by a control signal from a computor 18 operated in accordance with the output of an oxygen detector 17.
