PURPOSE: To improve the thyristor switching characteristics by detecting the zero crossing time of a thyristor anode current or commutation circuit current and applying gate reverse bias voltage in response to the zero cross signal.
CONSTITUTION: The output signal pg of a pulse generator 44 for generating periodical pulse pg is applied to the set input terminal of reverse bias setting circuit 46 and pulse amplifier 45. The output signal from the circuit 46 is applied to a gate reverse bias circuit 47. The output signal 8c of a zero cross detector 48 is applied to the reset input terminal T of the circuit 46 to thus become the reset signal for preparing timing for applying the gate reverse bias voltage. When the gate reverse bias voltage Vgr is applied in the vicinity of zero crossing time of the anode current Is of a thyristor 33, it can improve the switching chracteristics of the thyristor 33.
