PURPOSE:To heighten the reliablity of a fuel element, by means of reducing the generation of stress corrosion cracking of a cladding tube due to pellets cracking by thermal stress by setting up concaved parts with grinding parts around the outer circumference of nuclear fuel pellets. CONSTITUTION:Concaved parts 71 of a range of the depth delta of 0.1delta/r<0.3 (r=a radius of pellt) with grinding parts 70 are bored on the outer circumferent surface of fuel pellets 2 which are formed and sintered by a normal process. Even if crackings may be generated to the pellets 2 by the thermal stress when the reactor is in operation, the pellets 2 and the cladding tube are contacted by the surface, and the local stress exerted on the cladding tube is reduced, and the generation of stress corrosion cracking is prevented, thereby the reliabilty of the fuel elements is heightened.
