Abstract
PURPOSE:To enhance a limit output with an increase in the boiling length of a coolant, by providing a porous material layer within a range of 1m at the lower end of the outer surface of a fuel-clad pipe for a fuel rod. CONSTITUTION:A fuel rod 1 has a fuel pellet 3 housed in a fuel-clad pipe 2, a plenum section 6 and a spring 7 are set on the top thereof and the clad pipe 2 is sealed up with an upper end plug 4 and a lower end plug 5. A porous substance layer 8 is provided on the circumference to a position 1m from the lower end of the clad pipe 2. Then, when a reactor pressure vessel is loaded with a fuel assembly housing the fuel rod 1, the boiling of a coolant starts near the lower end of the fuel assembly. As a result, the fuel assembly increases in the boiling length and a limit output enhances. In this manner, the limit output enhances thereby achieving a larger operation output without impairing the safety.
