Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent radiation pollution at the bonding part by forming a thin-wall cylindrical part at the end part of a clad pipe for housing nuclear fuel pellets, fitting the end plug of the specific shape and welding the bonding part.
CONSTITUTION: A thin-wall cylindrical part 13 is machined to the end part of a clad pipe 1a and a guide pipe 14 provided with a stepped part 15 to be put in contact with this is carried and is fitted onto said part. After a required number of nuclear fuel pellets 3 are loaded into the clad pipe through a guide pipe, the guide pipe is removed and the end plug 2a of the shape shown in the figure is fitted to the end part of the clad pipe. At this time, the thin-wall cylindrical part of the clad pipe fits into the annular concave groove 19 of the end plug and the end face 20 abuts against the machined surface 13a of the clad pipe and therefore there is no likelihood for deposition of pellet powder on the bonding part of both. Hence, even if the bonding part is welded, not only welding defects are prevented but also the radiation pollution from the bonding part is prevented, thus the handling of the assembled nuclear fuel rods is made safe.
