Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently separate Y from heavy rare earth emements by adding EDDA to an aq. soln. of heavy rare earth elements contg. Y and extracting the Y with a carboxylic acid type solvent.
CONSTITUTION: For example, a mixt. of rare earth elements is dissolved in water and the soln. is treated with an acidic phosphoric acid ester as extracting solvent to extract Y and heavy rare earth elements of atomic no. 66W71, leaving rare earth elements of atomic no. 57W65 in the soln. The solvent phase is then back extracted with a mineral acid to obtain the Y and the heavy rare earth elements as an aq. soln. EDDA is added to the soln. and dissolved to adjust the concn. of each component and the pH of the soln. Thereafter, extraction is carried out using a carboxylic acid type extracting solvent such as naphthenic acid, versatic acid or isocaprylic acid to selectively extract the Y. The extracted Y in the solvent can be separated by back extraction with a mineral acid
