Abstract
PURPOSE: To carry out treatment of nitrification efficiently by way of biological, fixed bed method, by adding BOD source to ammonia containing water with less content BOD at the initial stage of operation (when nitrifying microbes are gathering and being cultivated), and thereby attaching the nitrifying microbes onto the surface of medium in a short while and cultivating the microbes thereon.
CONSTITUTION: Waste water 1 to be treated, containing ammoniacal nitrogen at BOD lower than 5 mg/litre, is introduced into adjustement tank 2, where alkaline agent 3 is added to adjust pH at 7W8 and also BOD source 4 is added to adjust BOD at about 3W20mg/litre. Further, inorganic carbon source 5 is added, if necessary, and then waste water is introduced into nitrification tank 6 which is filled with granular medium kept aerobic by oxygen containing gas 7, and treatment of nitrification is applied to the waste water. During the time when microbes are gathering and being cultivated, it is preferable to recirculate water 8 discharged from the nitrification tank 6 and thus to reduce the amount of microbes discharged to the outside of the system. However, when cultivation of microbes is completed, the above recirculation of water 8 is no more necessary, and addition of BOD source 4 is also required no more
