NEW MATERIAL:7-Alkylidenenorcamphor of formulaI(R is straight or branched chain alkyl of 2W7 carbon atoms).
EXAMPLE: 7-Pentylidenenorcamphor.
USE: General cosmetics, perfume formulation, and perfume mixtures as these compounds have menthol-like of flower-like odors and are chemically stable and non- toxic.
PREPARATION: 2-Chloro-2-cyano-7-alkylidenebicyclo[2,2,1]-5-heptene of formula II is reduced, e.g. with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst, preferably palladium to form 2-chloro-2-cyano-7-alkylidenebicyclo[2,2,1]heptane, which is hydrolyzed in the presence of a base to afford 7-alkylidenenorcamphor of formulaI.
