Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce a filter easily and inexpensively, while ensuring the high accuracy, by forming a preset portion having a preset low refractive index on a waveguide film which is formed on a substrate and which has the minimum film thickness. CONSTITUTION:A substrate 11 of Vycor glass, which has a refractive index of n1 for the wavelength lambda of a wabeguide light 12, is formed with a waveguide film 2 of similar glass having a refractive index n2. The substrate 11 is used as a first cladding layer, and the air having a refractive index of n3=1.0, which exists on the film 2, is used as a second cladding layer. At this time, the minimum film thickness W1 of the film 2 (wherein n2>n1>n3) is determined by formula I so that the light 12 of TE0 and TM0 modes can be transmitted. When a preset portion 3 of the film 2 is heated by a laser beam so that the reduction DELTAn in the refractive index satisfies formula II, the waveguide light 13 of the TE0 mode transmits through the portion 3. The TM0 mode component of the light 12 is irradiated as an irradiation mode at the portion 3 to the outside of the film 2.
