Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide highly adsorbent, paper-formable, short fiber active carbon, an organic short fiber is made into crimpless, infusible fiber of specific length, then filled in a heat resistant porous container, and heat treated in active gas atomosphere.
CONSTITUTION: Organic short fibers (e.g. phenol novolak fiber) of less than 100μ diameter is made infusible at 200 to 400°C in a heat resistant porous container, producing nonfusible crimpless short fiber of 0.5 to 20mm long in average. The nonfusible fiber is filled in a porous container such as metal or porcelain in bulk density of 0.07 to 0.20 g/ml and heat treated in active atomosphere such as steam CO2, O2 at 700 to 1100°C, preferably 850 to 950°C. The obtained short fiber active carbon is easily made into paper form having a good filtering property and easy to control qualities such as gas permeability, thickness, etc.
