PURPOSE:To automatically control the breadth at the final exit of the roughing mill to a specified value, by varying the tension between adjoining stands according to the deviation of the detected breadth of sheet on the exit side of the roughing mill from the set value. CONSTITUTION:When the sheet material arrives at the gaugemeter 40 at the exit side of the third stand ST3, the deviation of the actually measured sheet gauge from the set gauge value is delivered and is inputted to the operators 19, 29 and 38, 39. The output of the operator 29 is inputted to the driver 25 which then varies the tension between the second stand ST2 and the third stand ST3. Besides, this output is inputted to the driver 27 of the vertical roll mill E2, and the ratio of speeds of the vertical roll mill E2 and the horizontal roll mill R2 is kept at the initial set value. The output of the operator 19 is added to the output of the successive operator 30 by the adder 20, and the result is inputted to the driver 15 which then varies the tension between the first stand ST1 and the second stand ST2. On the other hand, the output of the operators 38, 39, are inputted to the roll gap controllers 37, 35, which then adjust the roll gaps of the vertical roll mill E3 and the horizontal roll mill R3.
