Abstract

PURPOSE: After applied to the substrate by melting in the absence of air, an air- curing coating composition is cured by heating in the presence of air, thus forming coating films with no use of solvent and curing agent.
CONSTITUTION: A plyester or polyether or epoxy resin containing 0.005W0.5 mole per 100 grams polymer of air-curing functional groups as furan or norbornene groups, when necessary, together with 3W100 PHR of pigments, less than 3 PHR of a curing catalyst and other additives are uniformly mixed and kneaded at 80W180°C into pellets. The pellets are heated in the absebce of air at 160W250°C to the molten state with a viscosity of 5W50 poise and fed from pipe 7 to head 2. The molten resin is coated on substrate 8 that is sent by conveyor 1 through slit 4 in a curtain flow of 5W200 micron thickness. The coated film 5 is cured by heating with infrared irradiator 6 and the excess molten resin is recovered.
