Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture an optical fiber having high strength without increasing the optical transmission loss, by coating a spun optical fuber with a composition contaoning orgnopolysiloxanes having vinyl group and silylidyne group respectively and a catalyst, and curing the composition.
CONSTITUTION: Spun or spun and resin-coated optical fiber is coated with a resin composition containing a vinyl group-containing organopolysiloxane, a silylidyne group-containing organopolysiloxane, and a platinum group catalyst, and is heated to cure the coating composition. The curing proceeds according to the reaction of the polysiloxane containing vinyl group with the polysiloxane containing silylidyne group, and a uniform coating film can be obtained without producing the decomposition product. The optical fiber coated with the above coating film has high strength, keeps low optical transmission loss of the original fiber, and can be drawn at a high speed.
