Abstract

PURPOSE:3-Cycloalkenone is oxidized with an oxidation agent to produce title compound useful as an intermediate for drugs, especially prostaglandin, agricultural chemicals, or perfumes, in one step reaction with industrial advatage. CONSTITUTION:The oxidation of 3-cycloalkenone of formula (Z is 1-4C ring- forming alkylene, wherein at least one of carbon atoms forming 5-8 membered ring may be substituted with a monofunctional 1-10C organic group), as 3-cyclopentenone, is effected using an oxidation agent, as trifluoroperacetic acid, to produce the objective compound of formula II, as 3,4-epoxycyclopentanone. The starting material, 3-cycloalkenone, includes unsubstituted and substituted 3-cycloalkenones.
