Abstract

PURPOSE: Glyoxal is beforehand made to act on diphenylamine containing impurities under a melting condition to convert the amine impurities to high-boiling compounds, which is removed by distillation as the residue, thus purifying efficiently title compound useful as an intermediate for various kinds of chemicals.
CONSTITUTION: Diphenylamine is purified by distillation wherein glyoxal is beforehand made to act on crude dihenylamine to convert the amine impurities to high- boiling compounds, which remain as the residue on the distillation. Various amine impurities included in the starting material and selectively react with glyoxal to convert to high-boiling compounds substantially not being distilled off. Then, only simple distillation gives readily high-purity diphenylamine.
EFFECT: High yield, the residue is simply disposed by, e.g., burning, thus reducing costs.
