Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound as dye-carriers, solvents, and a raw material for organic synthesis, by heat-treating a crude methylnaphthalene cut from fractional distillation of coal tar with a caustic alkali, and removing the impurities, e.g. colored components, etc., with distillation.
CONSTITUTION: A crude blue or royal purple methylnaphthalene cut (M), fractionated from coal tar, containing impurities, e.g. biphenyl, acenaphthene, and indole, is heated at 200°C or higher, preferably 230°C or higher, with a caustic alkali e.g. caustic potash or soda, in an amount of 1W10wt% based on (M), and then distilled to remove the impurities, e.g. colored components.
