Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as an intermediate for dyes, rubber chemicals, and medicines in high yield, by distilling the product prepared through oxidation of a diarylamine containing phenylenediamines in the presence of a metallic catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A diarylamine, e.g. phenylamine, containing 0.001W2.0wt% of phenylenediamines, e.g. o-phenylenediamine, is oxidized with molecular oxygen, e.g. air, in the presence of 0.05W5.0wt% calculated as metal of a metallic catalyst, e.g. copper acetate or naphthenate. The resulting product is distilled or recrystallized to purify the diarylamine.
EFFECT: The purified product substantially free from phenylenediamines can be obtained by very simple procedures. Discoloration will not occur even on storage for a long time.
