Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a microporous selectively permeable membrane suitable for precision filtration and ultrafiltration by using a polyurea type polymer the repeating unit of which is represented by a specific formula.
CONSTITUTION: A diamine of formula II, e.g. 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether and a diisocyanate of formula III, e.g. diphenylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate are reacted in a molar ratio of about 1:1 to form a polyurea type polymer of formula I. The reaction is conducted at 0W150, esp. 0W50°C in an aprotic polar solvent such as N-methyl-2-pyrolidone dried as far as possible. The polyurea polymer is then formed into microporous selectively permeable membrane by a known method as follows: a uniform membrane-forming soln. is prepared consisting of the polymer, an inorg. salt such as lithium nitrate and a solvent such as N-methyl-2-pyrolidone. The soln. is spread on a smooth surface of glass or the like and contacted to a solidifying medium such as water.
