Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare concentrated aqueous solution of (meth)acrylamide, continuously, using a column containing immobilized microbial cells having nitrilase activity, by feeding the column with (meth)acrylonitrile through a plurality of inlets.
CONSTITUTION: Immobilized cells of microorganism capable of hydrolyzing (meth)acrylonitrile to (meth)acrylamide, e.g. Corynebacterium N-771 strain, are packed in a column provided with more than one inlet of nitrile along the length of the column. An aqueous solution of (meth)acrylonitrile is fed to the column at one end, and at the same time, (meth)acrylonitrile is also fed thereto through the inlet at the wall of the column at a rate to give a homogeneous reaction mixture. As an alternate method, two or more columns connected together in series, wherein the second column, etc. are also provided with an inlet, are used in place of the above single tube.
