Abstract

PURPOSE: To virtually eliminate the difference in the total reflectance of non-display part and display part with virtually no effect of the thickness of pattern electrodes by forming a transparent insulator layer on substrates.
CONSTITUTION: A transparent insulation layer 40 of 1.60 to 1.85 in refractive index such as of Al2O3 is formed by sputtering on an upper substrate glass 41 to thicknesses 500 to 1000 Å, preferable 800 Å. On this are provided pattern electrodes 46 of a thickness 700 Å such as ones comprising containing 5% of SnO2 in In2O3 and further the lead wires thereof are provided. An orientation treatment layer 44 such as the one comprising diagonally evaporating silicon oxide to a thickness 500 Å is provided on these. A liquid crystal layer 48 composed of nematic liquid crystal is held between this substrate 41 and the lower substrate glass provided with a transparent insulation layer, common electrode and orientation treatment layer in a similar manner. As a result, the difference of the reflectances R1, R2 becomes minimum and the display face becomes easy to see.
