Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a high quality organic isocyanate compound in high yield and extremely fast reaction rate, by the phosgenation of an organic primary amine hydrochloride in the presence of a specific amount of activated charcoal and dimethylformamide.
CONSTITUTION: An organic primary amine hydrochloride is prepared by reacting an amine with at least 1 mole of HC1 per 1 mole of the amino group, in an inert organic solvent, if necessary, in the presence of phosgene. The amine hydrochloride thus obtained is made to react with phosgene (at least 2 moles per 1 equivalent of the hydrochloride) in the precence of activated charcoal (o.1W10 wt% based on the amine) and demethylformamide (0.01W1.0 wt% based on the amine) at 100W 200°C to obtain the objective compound such as tolylene disocyanate.
EFFECT: Rrcovered activated charcoal (containing a complex of DMF and phosgene) can be reused as the phosgenation catalyst only by adding a small amount of the lost charcoal.
