Abstract

PURPOSE: In a self-supporting cable wherein a cable core and a suspension wire for supporting the core are covered with a common protective sheath, to prevent crack in the sheath by applying a powder of thermoplastic adhesive between the wire and the sheath.
CONSTITUTION: A suspension wire 1 is preheated by a preheater 5 and passed through a tank 6 filled with a powder P of thermoplastic adhesive (e.g. ethylene- vinyl acetate copolumer, ethylene-methyl acrylate copolymer) which well adheres both to the wire 1 and to the protective sheath 2. The powder P is melted by the heat of the preheated wire 1 and solidified by a cooling means 7. The wire 1 together with a cable core 3 is fed to an extruder 4 for extruding a common protective sheath 2 thereover; the powder P is melted by the heat of the molten sheath 2 and adheres both to the wire 1 and the sheath 2. Even when the sheath 2 is applied with a tension, no crack occurs in the sheath 2.
