Abstract

PURPOSE: In a multi-chamber electrodialyzer, both frames of concentration chambers and dilution chambers are changed in thicknesses at their inlets and outlets so that cation and anion ion exchanger membranes are inclined, thereby to enhance current efficiency.
CONSTITUTION: The frame thicknesses of the concentration chambers 3 and dilution chamber 4 are arranged to oppositely change in the directions from the inlets to outlets respectively. The thickness ratio of inlet to outlet is made to about 0.5 for the dilution chamber 4 and about 2 for the concentration chamber 3. The spacers 9 and 10 for the concentration and dilution chambers are respectively adjusted to be defined by the frames 3 and 4 of the concentration and dilution chambers. Thus, cation and anion exchange membranes 1 and 2 are inclined, resulting in an increased current efficiency, a decreased concentration polarization caused by the increase of flow rate and differential pressure, etc., and a drastically enhanced limiting current density in an electrodialyzer.
