Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance contact characteristics without causing damage to mechanical processability by adding specific amounts of one or more of Mg, Al, Ti, and rare earth elements to a Ag-Bi oxide-Sn electric contact material containing one or more of Cu, Zn, and Ni.
CONSTITUTION: A silver-bismuth oxide-tin(may be replaced by in partly) electric contact material as a silver-oxide-contact material is mixed with one or more of Cu, Zn, and Ni, together with one or more of Mg, Al, Ti, and rare earth elements in a proportion of 0.01 to 0.5 wt%. A compounded mixture containing Ag, Bi, Sn, In, one or more of Cu, An, and Ni, and one or more of Mg, Al, Ti, and rare earth elements is melted and then cast into a mold. Then, the molding is ground, molded by compression into a cylindrical form, and then sintered at 700°C for 20 to 50 hours in a current of oxygen to concurrently cause internal oxidation of Bi, Sn, etc. Then, the sintered body is extruded by hot extrusion into a cylindrical bar and then subjected to a repeated elongation and annealing treatment to obtain a wire which is in turn processed into contact rivets and then annealed at 700°C for one hour to manufacture electric contacts which are excellent in fusil adhesion resistance, consumption resistance, and mechanical processability.
