Abstract
PURPOSE: A pipe is filled with a liquid and any two points are frozen to cause pressure therebetween enough to expand the pipe statically.
CONSTITUTION: A pipe 2 is fully filled with a liquid such as water through the auxiliary pipe 9. The switch valve 17 is turned to the cooling side and the switch valves 6 are opened to fill the coolers 3 symmetrically arranged to the pipe plate 1 with cooling medium 15 such as liquid nitrogen. The pipe portions facing the coolers 3 are simultaneously frozen at frozing zone 14a, 14b. When the freezing proceeds, the unfrozen center portion 13b is experienced with strong forces from both sides. Such force acts on the side wall of the pipe 2 and as pressure increases, the pipe 2 is plastically deformed to firmly contact with the pipe plate 1. This pressure is indicated on the pressure gauge 12. After the completion of the pipe expansion, the cooling medium is stopped and naturally melted, or alternatively the switch valve is turned to the warm side to send warm water from the warm water reservoir 16 for metling.
