Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a ternary catalyst with a broad wind width and superior durability which catalyst is obtd. by supporting Pt, Rh, W and an alkali metal chloride on a carrier and is capable of cleaning harmful components such as NOx, CO and HC in exhaust gas at the same time.
CONSTITUTION: A carrier such as spherical alumina is impregnated with a soln. of a W cpd. such as ammonium paratungstate, dried, calcined in air at 500W800°C to support W, and further impregnated with a mixed soln. of a Pt cpd. such as chloroplatinic acid, a Rh cpd. such as rhodium chloride and an alkali metal chloride such as NaCl. The impregnated catalyst is then evaporated to dryness, calcined in air at 200°CWbelow the m.p. of the alkali metal chloride, and reduced with H2 or the like to prepare the desired catalyst. The amt. of Pt and Rh supported is 0.01W5 wt% to the amt. of the carrier, and that of NaCl 0.1W30 wt%. The atomic ratio of W:(Pt+Rh) is 1W100:1.
