Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the title catalyst with enhanced initial catalyst performance and durability for cleaning car exhaust gas by adding a cpd. having more than a specific no. of -CO2H groups in one molecule to a soln. of a platinum ammine complex cpd. and supporting platinum on an alumina carrier using the soln.
CONSTITUTION: The platinum ammine complex cpd. (APF) contains NH3, N2H4, NH2OH, pyridine, etc. as its ligand, and NH3-contg. APF is desirable because of low cost. To an APF soln. is added a cpd. having 3 or more -CO2H groups in one molecule, e.g. citric acid or trimellitic acid, and an alumina-based carrier is dipped in the soln. to support the APF on the carrier. The carrier is then calcined in air at above 300°C to decompose the APF, thus supporting platinum on the carrier.
