Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the oxidation and improve the durability, by increasing the binder ratio at the outer surface of the rare earth magnet than in the inner part thereof.
CONSTITUTION: Ferromagnetic powder of an intermetallic compound formed from a rare earth element and an iron-family transition element (such as samarium-cobalt) is provided by high-frequency induction heating and ball mill grinding. Then a binder consisting of epoxy-resin having a viscosity of 200W10000 centipoise or the like is kneaded into this by an amount of 4% by weight, and the substance thus obtained is subjected to compression molding (1.5W7 t/cm2) in a magnetic field of 10000 Oe. Next, the molded article is heated at 150°C for 1 hour to be hardened, and then magnetized to form a rare earth magnet. When the compression molding is effected at a pressure of more than 1.5 t/cm2, the binder moves to the outer surface of the article to make the surface binder concetration large, so that the oxidation is prevented and the durability can be improved. Alternatively, the binder concentration at the surface can also be increased by immersing the molded article into the binder and then increasing or decreasing the pressure.
