Abstract

PURPOSE: To stably carry out the title electrolysis with little cell voltage rise over a long term by plating a cathode in a Ni plating bath at above a specific current density and using this Ni-plated cathode as the cathode for electrolysis of an aq. soln. of an alkaline earth metal salt in a disphragm method electrolytic cell.
CONSTITUTION: A cathode is plated in a Ni plating bath at a current density above 9A/dm2. Using this Ni-plated cathode as the cathode for electrolysis of an aq. soln. of an alkaline earth metal in a diaphragm method electrolytic cell, little alkaline earth metal hydroxide is deposited on the cathode, and hence low voltage operation can be continued over a long term. As the current density in the plating bath, 9W 25 A/dm2 is esp. desirable. The concn. of the aq. soln. supplied to the cell ranges from 0.5 mol/l to the saturation concn. at the temp. of the soln. supplied to the cell, and the current density in electrolysis is pref. 2W20 A/dm2.
