Abstract

PURPOSE: A polyphosphonate is admixed to a cellulose solution in dimethylsufoxide and the mixture is wet spun to produce title fibers with good dispersion of the polyphosphonate in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: A polyphosphonate is dispersed in a cellulose solution made by dissolving cellulose in dimethylsulfoxide in the presence of formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde to prepare a uniform, transparent and highly stable spinning dope. Then wet spinning is conducted using the dope to form filament yarns. Even when a polyphosphonate of considerably high polymerization degree is employed, the amount added can be increased with no trouble and the spinning can also be smoothly effected to produce uniform yarns that can give brightly dyed products. The yield of the polyphosphonate used as a flame retarder exceed 90% and usually attains over 95%.
