Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve a leakage preventive function and life of a mechanical seal, by reducing differential pressure applied to the mechanical seal by working pressure to a space between the mechanical seal and a gland packing by water injection from the outside.
CONSTITUTION: Flashing water with pressure slightly higher than the suction pressure of a pump is sent to a mechanical seal portion and water pressure reduced by means of an orifice 18 is fed between the mechanical seal and a gland packing 32 from an external water source during the time when an apparatus is being operated. Slight leakage is formed from the gland packing 32, but some water is returned to the external water source and a flow is produced because pressure is not reduced by means of the orifice in so much flow, thus providing with a pressure reduction effect by means of the orifice. Consequently, differential pressure between the upper stream side and lower stream side of the mechanical seal can be lessened as compared to the case when the lower stream side is opened to the atmosphere.
