Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an OH-containing ether useful as an intermediate, in high purity, in high yield and in a short time by the ring-opening addition reaction of an epoxy compound and an alcohol, using a catalyst comprising tin tetrachloride and sulfuric acid.
CONSTITUTION: An OH-containing ether of the formula (R1=C8W30 alkyl, alhenyl; R2=CnH2n+1, CnH2n-1, CH2Cl, H), e.g. 2-hydroxypropyl-alkyl ether, 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropylalkyl ether etc., is obtained by the ring-opening etherification of an epoxy compound, e.g. epichlorohydrin, ethylene oxide etc., with a C8W30 alcohol. The use of tin tetrachloride together with sulfuric acid as the catalyst in the reaction shortens the reaction time and minimizes the formation of isomers and side products.
