Abstract

PURPOSE:A glass tube that is coated with the interlayer of glass film on the inner surface is shrinked in the inner diameter to the outer diameter of the core rod, thereby producing optical fibers with high roundness and no inclination in film thickness by the rod-in-tube method. CONSTITUTION:After glass tube 1 is coated with glass film 2 as the interlayer on the inner surface, the inner diameter is shrinked by use of burner 4. Then core rod 3 with the outer diameter close to the inner one of glass tube 1 is inserted and the both are integrated by fusing with heat. They are sufficiently treated with heat to adhere core rod 3 closely to glass tube 1 and remove strains at the interface. When the heating process is carried out by standing the glass tube upright, the inclination in wall thickness and reduction in roundness can be effectively reduced. Then, the resulting rod is drawn into small cross section to produce said optical fibers.
