Abstract

CONSTITUTION:In the friction welding of metals, containing MC-type carbide mainly consisting of Nb, Ta, etc., to each other or to dissimilar materials 5, 6, a tilt angle theta, 0.3-1.2 degrees, is given to either one of faying surfaces, and either one or both are rotated under a comparatively low pressure for causing friction; after that, a higher pressure is loaded and then the rotation is stopped. In the early stage of welding, the contact area is made small so as to stably secure the generation of heat owing to the surface friction being locally loaded with high pressur; hereupon, the amount of upset 1 becomes finally larger than the case 2 giving no tilt angle, the generation of belt type carbide is prevented, and the generating carbide is easily removed away; hereby, the good weld zone is obtained.
