Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect the hydrogen embrittlement of a pressure pipe of a heavy water reactor, by inserting a test piece into the pressure pipe and stress-fracturing the test piece.
CONSTITUTION: The arc-shaped test piece 6 is cut out from a pressure pipe. A crack 10 is produced in the inside of the test piece. There is local residual compressive stress at the tip of the crack 10. To make the residual stress into tensile stress, the outside of the test piece 6 is pushed at three points by adjusting a bolt 16 and a nut 17 while the test piece is supported at both its ends. The test piece 6 and a jig for the three-point pushing are put together in the pressure pipe of the heavy water reactor. Since there is the tensile stress at the tip of the crack 10, the test piece makes the same hydrogen embrittlement behavior as there is a flaw 4 or a crack 5 in the pressure pipe 3. Therefore, the hydrogen embrittlement of the pressure pipe 3 can be supervised by periodically picking the test piece 6 out of the reactor and fracturing it.
