PURPOSE: To appropriately detect the hydrogen embrittlement of a pressure pipe, by eliminating the adverse effect of residual compressive stress remaining at the tip of a crack.
CONSTITUTION: A notch 2 is provided on an arc-shaped test piece 1. The center 3 of the outside surface and both the ends 4 of the inside surface of the test piece are repeatedly pushed for three-point bending while the test piece is supported at the center 3 and both the ends 4. Thereby, a fatigue crack 5 is produced in the test piece. The test piece is inserted into a pressure-pipe-type heavy water reactor. At the time required, the test piece 1 is picked out of the reactor. The three-point bending of the test piece supported at the three points 3, 4 is repeated so that the fatigue crack is enlarged and the tip of the crack goes far awary from the residual compressive stress 7 remaining at the preceding tip of the crack. Thereafter, a load on the test piece 1 is statically increased so that the test piece is fractured. Then, the fracture toughness of the test piece is determined.
