Abstract

PURPOSE: To prolong the life of the catalyst, remarkably, in the hydroformylation of allyl alcohol in an organic medium in the presence of a Rh complex compound and tri-substituted phosphine, by adding a specific amount of diphosphinoalkane to the reaction system.
CONSTITUTION: Allyl alcohol is subjected to hydroformylation in an organic medium, e.g. benzene, in the presence of a Rh complex compound {e.g. HRh(CO)[P (C6H5)3]3} and tri-substituted phosphine (e.g. tri-phenylphosphine, etc.). Hydroxybutylaldehyde is extracted from the hydroformylation mixture with water, and the residual solution after the extraction is circulated as a catalytic solution to the hydroformylation process where diphosphinoalkane of the formula [A1 and A2 are aryl; R1 and R2 are aryl, -CnH2n+1(n≥4); Z=alkylene] is used in a ratio 2P/Rh= 0.2W2.0 to the Rh complex compound.
