Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a fluorine-contg. ion exchange membrane suitable for use as a diaphragm for electrolysis of alkali metal halide which diaphragm requires resistance to heat and chemicals, by chemically bonding an olefin cpd. having an ion exchange group to a fluorine-contg. polymer membrane having a -SO2Cl group in its side chain in the presence of a free radical forming reagent.
CONSTITUTION: A known fluorine-contg. cation exchange membrane having a -SO3H group is treated with PCl5, etc. to form a fluorine-contg. polymer membrane having a -SO2Cl group in its side chain. The known membrane includes a membrane of a copolymer of CF2=CF2 and perfluorovinyl ether sulfonic acid. The polymer membrane is then reacted with an olefin cpd. having an ion exchange group, e.g. allyl alcohol at below 100°C in the presence of a free radical forming reagent such as benzoyl peroxide. This reaction is pref. carried out in a soln. reaction system using a fluorine-contg. solvent such as fluorinated hydrocarbon or alcohol. The resulting fluorine- contg. ion exchange membrane may further be oxidized to introduce the exchange group as a carboxylic acid group, thereby considerably enhancing the current efficiency when the membrane is used as a diaphragm for electrolysis of alkali metal halide.
