PURPOSE: To obtain emetine which is an amebicide industrially advantageously, by alkylating a reaction product between a quinolidine and a phenethyl amine to form emetine-4-one and isoemetine-4-one, followed by reducing them.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula IX: (R and R' are lower alkyl groups; H bonded by the wave line is a racemic isomer) is reacted with a 3-hydroxyl-4- alkoxy phenethyl amine to form a compound of formula X, which is alkylated with a diazoalkane of the formula R" N2 (R" is lower alkylidene group) to give a compound of formula II. The resulting compound is reduceed with lithium aluminum hydride in a solvent, e.g. THF, under heating and refluxing to form the compound of formula I, which is converted into a suitable salt, if necessary.
