Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as musk perfumes of high quailty in a short time in high yield, by depolymerization and ring closure of a polyester prepared through polycondensation of a dibasic fatty acid and ethylene glycol in the presence of a catalyst of an Al compound having a carbonate radical.
CONSTITUTION: CO2 or a substance to generate carbon dioxide, e.g. NaHCO3, is brought into contact with a basic aqueous solution of an Al compound, e.g. Al(OH)3 or aluminum acetate, to give an Al compound having a carbonate radical. A polyester obtained by polycondensation of a dibasic fatty acid of formula I: (n is an integer 6W14) or its ester and ethylene glycol or oxide is subjected to depolymerization and ring closure at a reduced pressure of 10-2W1mmHg at 180W 280°c to give a large ring ethylenedioate of furmula II.
